World of Discovery A
fun collection of activities for toddlers (1-4 years) Coktel's A.J.'s World of Discovery marks the debut of A.J., a lovable alien who foreshadows Adi, a more famous character in Coktel's line of edutainment titles that are still going strong in France. Similar to The Treehouse but designed for younger kids, A.J.'s World of Discovery offers a number of mini-games and activities in attractive VGA graphics. Kids can solve a sliding tile puzzle, design a cartoon face from different facial components, create an electronic drawing using a surprisingly robust color palette and paint tools, practice English alphabet using a keyboard interface, and more. There are many hidden hotspots in the game that, when clicked, bring up funny animations. A.J. is always around to provide help, and his digitized speeches are appropriate and never annoying. With vibrant graphics, user-friendly interface, and a number of fun activities, A.J.'s World of Discovery is one excellent package that toddlers are sure to enjoy. Recommended! |

| Dino-Sorcerer
A fun
little mix-and-match program for kids.
Not really a game, Dino-Sorcerer lets you create fictional dinosaurs from various parts, e.g. tail, back, head, etc. The resultant dinosaur can be saved or printed (although I doubt many new printers will work with this program). One of the most creative features in the game is that as you change a body part, the name of the dinosaur will also change accordingly. All the names sound semi-authentic, and some are quite amusing. Overall, a fun little game that will probably delight the youngsters in your house. |

GUMBOOTS Australian version of Carmen Sandiego Gumboots Australia is among the best Carmen Sandiego "clones" after Broderbund popularized the "edutainment" concept with this series. It is essentially Where in Australia is Carmen Sandiego?, except now you're tracking some other criminal mastermind. This is a good game with excellent on-line help and educational value, and you (or your kids) will learn a lot about Australian geography. |

Redhook's Revenge is a fun and educational game of life on the Caribbean seas of yore. Billed as "pirate educational board game," Redhook's Revenge fulfills every word in its claim: it reasonably simulates a pirate's life (sail, dig for treasure, fight other ships, and plunder towns) using attractive board-game format. Dice throws dictate how many 'spaces' on the sea your ship can move, and you must answer trivia questions from time to time to proceed. In short, the game combines classic Treasure Island with the best elements of Monopoly and Trivial Pursuit into a wholly engrossing and addictive experience that fans of pirate history would not want to miss. Highly recommended, especially to budding historian(s) in your house. |

Discover Space is an excellent desktop planetary program. Discover Space is more of an application than an edutainment title or a game. It basically lets you view the night sky from any vantage point and just about any year. What sets it apart from programs like Dance of the Planets or, more recently, Red Shift is the accessibility to kids. The interface is very easy to learn, and the included databaes of constellations is a nice bonus. The constellations section not only shows a diagram of all the named constellations, but also readable background the myths and facts behind their names. With crisp graphics, intuitive interface, and the right balance between accessibility and depth of information, Discover Space will appeal to kids of all ages who find 'professional' astronomy software a bit too intimidating. |
